Grifola frondosa and Trametes versicolor mushrooms help with diabetes

Mushrooms and Diabetes

Which mushrooms can help you control your blood-sugar effectively? There are several clinical studies on the interactions between blood glucose in people with diabetes. However we must underline that these mushrooms do not substitute a healthy diet, and they are not an excuse to ignore or cheat on your prescribed diet, or ignore regular physical activity.

A recent clinical review (available here) highlighted the benefits of the Grifola frondosa mushroom for the treatment of type 2 diabetes – as well as various biological effects including immunomodulatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant effects.

A study (available here) has measured the effectiveness of various mushrooms, in particular Trametes versicolor and Grifola frondosa, in inhibiting the enzyme α-amylase and α-glucosidase.These two are the key enzymes for hyperglycemia typical of diabetes. The study showed that Grifola frondosa effectively inhibits α-glucosidase enzyme. This helps in lowering blood glucose significantly.

A polysaccharide extracted from the mushroom Grifola frondosa  has proven to be able to protect pancreatic cells used for the production of insulin, significantly increasing its resistance to free radicals and chemical agents (available here) ( for example: Streptozoticina, is a drug usaed in the cases pancreatic caner and much harmful to insulin-producing β cells and could lead to insulin deficiency, which would lead to diabetes).
